The Kempe Foundation seeks a President/CEO with the vision, commitment, and strong leadership capabilities to rigorously pursue the resources needed to end child abuse and neglect.


The Kempe Foundation is a 36 year old nonprofit that provides funding, raises awareness, undertakes policy advocacy, and marshals resources for The Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect; a section of the Department of Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado School of Medicine.  Kempe is a national leader in the field of pediatric child abuse treatment through its academic research, clinical services, and prevention efforts while treating over 700 abused children and training over 4,000 professionals in 2009.


The Kempe Center has built its reputation as a national and international leader by:

  • Creating model programs for replication
  • Providing quality clinical assessment and treatment for abused children and their families
  • Developing curricula to train professionals
  • Training and consulting to other professionals, agencies and institutions, and
  • Conducting research studies that assist in program development and public policy making.


Key responsibilities of the President/CEO for the Foundation include:

  • Provide leadership and vision for the development and implementation of the Foundation’s strategy, working in close collaboration with the Board of Directors and The Kempe Center.
  • Develop and implement strategies in support of the Foundation’s vision, values, mission and goals.
  • Provide leadership in maintaining and promoting a synergistic relationship with The Kempe Center.
  • Work actively with the Board of Directors and the Development staff to increase funds significantly to support Foundation goals.
  • Lead efforts to cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors.
  • Effectively manage and lead a quality staff with a focus on hiring, developing, and retaining the best.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the Foundation, ensuring effective use of resources and legal compliance.
  • Present the Kempe Foundation’s mission and program in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders.
  • Be an advocate for the movement to end child abuse and neglect.


The President/CEO manages an annual budget of $2.3 million and a staff of 12 professionals.



The successful candidate will have a reputation of high integrity, credibility, and trust, and his/her past accomplishments should add significant value to the Kempe Foundation.  The President/CEO must develop and maintain a high national and local profile for Kempe and for the movement to end child abuse and neglect. The President/CEO must be an experienced and successful leader with significant demonstrated expertise in fundraising, legislative initiatives, and community leadership.


Qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated visionary leadership resulting in outstanding mission and operating success.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the issue of child abuse and neglect.
  • Significant experience with a non-profit organization.
  • Ability to develop and implement long term strategic goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a board of Directors, a team of managers, and partner groups.
  • Ability to develop, lead and motivate staff.
  • Demonstrated fundraising acumen and significant fundraising success.
  • Ability to recognize change and manage a growing organization.
  • Cultural sensitivity with a strong commitment to diversity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Ideal experience

  • Minimum ten (10) years management experience in business, government or nonprofit organizations required.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience as a CEO highly preferred.
  • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree preferred.
  • Proven performance in establishing and growing public and private business partnerships.
  • Proven effective relationship building with clients, board members, donors, community representatives, government officials and other corporate leaders.


Also candidates must be willing to travel locally and nationally as needed and to reside in the Denver metro area.
